Bingham Updates-September 2
It has been said that, “We all have our time machines. Some take us back, they’re memories. Some take us forward, they’re our dreams”. At Bingham we have our traditions and memories that transport us to the past and give us a strong base on which to build. Our dreams for the future are found in our students as they look ahead dreaming dreams that we could never have imagined.
If you are familiar with Bingham, you know that we are big on tradition. We are dedicated to preserving our past. Our school has a unique history and even though we have changed buildings and locations through the 102 years of our existence we have always taken the old and added it to the new and made it even better. In our main hall we have a room dedicated to storing memorabilia from all the years of Bingham’s existence. Stop in and visit our “Alumni Room” and check out our large display cases filled with Bingham items donated by alumni, family, friends, community members, and others. Each year new items are added. At this year’s opening faculty meeting, our principal, Mr. Hicks, shared a recent contribution and the journey it took to get to Bingham’s Alumni Room.
This past summer an elementary school teacher discovered a ring box as she was cleaning out a storage room at El Oro Way Elementary School in Granada Hills, CA. Attached to the box was a note from Iris to Ivan asking him to return the 1930 class ring and two lapel pins found in the box to Bingham Canyon, UT After an internet search, the teacher located Bingham’s website and Mr. Hicks e-mail. She contacted him and after matching the initials inside the ring to the 1930 graduating class list supplied by Mr. Hicks, they came up with the name Runor Martinson, who had been the Junior Class President and on the football team before graduation. After more research his family was found and the ring and pins were donated to be added to our collection. This is just an example of the interesting way so many items have found a home back where they began. We love our traditions here at BHS; burning the “B”, white-washing the “B”, pinning ceremonies, Pay Dirt Awards, and Sub-4-Santa are just a few among so many others. To this, we add, winning and striving for excellence in all we do.
Each year our students take the best from the past and add their own spin to it. We love our past but we stay current with the latest and greatest in education with our up to date communication through e-mail, text messages, and our website. Our students have the opportunity to take concurrent enrollment and classes offered at the Jordan Technical Center which help them prepare for, and even get a jump on a career. We have a state of the art football score board and field on which our teams compete. Our yearbook has come a long way from the early years and is consistently one of the best in the nation. Our performing arts stay current and compete with the best.
We are confident that the dreams of our students, added to the great education they will receive here at Bingham, will take them unbelievable places. We hope that each and every student will catch the vision of Bingham. It is a great day to be a Miner.
