American Music of the 20th Century (Period 4th )

Course Description

This course will explore the history of popular music in American, all the way from pre-rock influence, such as mainstream pop, rhythm & blues, and country & western styles, through today's multi-billion dollar recording and concert-touring industry. Students will be asked to think critically about the influence that popular music has had on American culture, politics, and society throughout the second half of the 20th century (and some beyond). The class will focus on music from specific geographic regions, major record labels, specific genres of popular music, and important historical events. It is an academic class--but no musical training or background is required.
